The vendor API path

If you have the budget, vendor APIs are the most “correct” answer for chromatography data integration:

  • Full audit trail — vendor-validated end to end
  • Vendor support — covered under the existing maintenance contract

For a single-instrument, single-vendor lab, this can pencil out. For a multi-vendor, multi-site pharma group, it routinely doesn’t.

When vendor APIs are still the right answer

  • Single-vendor, GMP-strict — full vendor validation matters more than the cost
  • Existing license already paid — sunk cost, use what you have
  • Real-time / event-driven needs — APIs push events; PDF-based extraction is batch-oriented
  • Workstation database is the system of record — when you need bidirectional integration, not just read

When ChromaParse is the better fit

  • Multi-vendor environments — one tool, all major formats
  • Mid-budget pharma — when the API math doesn’t pencil out
  • CDMOs / contract labs — sponsor data flows through PDFs anyway; the API approach doesn’t fit the operating model
  • LIMS migration projects — historical PDF extraction at scale, no API access to the legacy system

A pragmatic hybrid

Some large pharma run both: vendor APIs for the workstations they own and ChromaParse for the rest (third-party labs, contract sites, legacy data, archived PDFs). The two aren’t mutually exclusive — they cover different parts of the data lifecycle.
